Long-term variability of low-mass X-ray binaries

چکیده
We consider modulations of mass captured by the compact object from the companion star’s stellar wind in Low Mass X-ray Binaries with late type giants. Based on 3D simulations with two different hydrodynamic codes used Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches – the SPH code GADGET and the Eulerian code PLUTO, we conclude that a hydrodynamical interaction of the wind matter within a binary system even without eccentricity results in variability of the mass accretion rate with characteristic time-scales close to the orbital period. Observational appearances of this wind might be similar to that of an accretion disc corona/wind.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملWind accretion in the massive X-ray binary 4U 2206+54: abnormally slow wind and moderately eccentric orbit
Massive X-ray binaries are usually classified depending on the properties of the donor star in classical, supergiant and Be X-ray binaries, the main difference being the mass transfer mechanism between the two components. The massive X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 does not fit in any of these groups, and deserves a detailed study to understand how the transfer of matter and the accretion on to the com...

متن کاملThe Quiescent Optical and Infrared Counterpart to Exo 0748–676 = Uy Vol
We present optical and infrared photometry of the low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748–676 in quiescence for the first time in 24 years since it became X-ray active in 1985. We find the counterpart at average magnitudes of R = 22.4 and J = 21.3. We monitored the source approximately nightly through 2008 November to 2009 January. During this time there was considerable night-to-night optical variabili...
متن کاملHst Detection of a Quiescent Low Mass X-ray Binary Companion in 47 Tucanae
We present the results of a search for optical counterparts to the two quiescent low mass X-ray binaries (X5 and X7) in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, using high quality Chandra and HST images. A faint blue (V = 21.7; U −V = 0.9) star within 0.03 of the eclipsing system X5 shows variability on both short and long timescales, and is the counterpart of the X-ray source. The colors and variabili...
